It was replied by a harsh growl: "What if I want to? What if I want to see if Midnight is worthy or not?"
The reply was soft: "You can't do this, my Chief. You're unwell."
"As long as she proves herself worthy..."
Midnight couldn't stand the conversation any longer. She burst into the room. She gave a slight bow to show respect. "Father, I mean, Chief Darke. Wisp told me that you called for me," she said.
Her father nodded. "As most wolves in the pack know, I am unwell."
Almost all. You left your daughter out of important news feed.
"Thus, I need my eldest born to take my position," continued the Chief.
What happened to calling me daughter, anyway? Eldest, this. Midnight, that, grumbled Midnight in her heart. At least it would have been better if my "good chief-daddy" didn't kill mother.
Mother... Midnight remembered her mom's soft skin. She was a grey wolf, with black paws and a darker grey muzzle. Her eyes were calming, usually seen to be as striking yellow. Or maybe, it was because Midnight never saw her mom without the light.
Her mom, Snow, was the wolf who raised her. Midnight almost growled at the Chief thinking about it. Certainly, her dad did nothing to raise her.
"I know," said Chief Darke. "No one really agrees that you, as a she-wolf, should take over over my position as a chief."
Anger boiled in Midnight. How dare he! He was belittling her, isn't he?
"As most female wolves do, they take up the Pack Quest. Even our dear Snow did it," said the Chief, almost laughing on the mention of Snow.
"Yes, what's the catch?" asked Midnight, faking the fact she knew.
Chief Darke looked at his left, where his advisor sat. A black wolf with grey marking around his blue-yellow eyes looked at Midnight. "After a discussion with our dearest advisor, Shadow and I decided to tweak the rules a little... for you," said the Chief, his voice hinted with a dark surprise.
Midnight looked at the advisor, Shadow. The advisor was about as old as her father and was glaring at Chief Darke, almost to say, Wasn't it 100% your idea?
Shadow, however, stood up and began making his way towards Midnight. With a sigh, he stated, "You are to complete the Pack Quest alone," he said. Midnight eyed the advisor's lean body, a scar left on the right side of his body due to a fight against a hunter. "You are to leave, as soon as a full moon rises, and return a week after."
"Then why the fang is it called a Pack Quest when it's a lone wolf quest?" growled Midnight.
The Chief gave a hollow laugh, but without humour. "We shall call it it the Lone Quest for you, my dear."
"That's just plain--"
"We tweaked the rules. Just a tiny bit."
Midnight felt like exploding with anger. "Removing nine wolves from a quest is not a tiny bit! A few is more that a tiny bit, and a few is, like, three! Tiny bit it like... ONE!"
"True that," sighed her father, truly irritated. "One rule."
Shadow let his claws run on the back of Midnight's fur. "You are expected to get ready now. Tomorrow, the full moon rises," said the advisor.
"Fine," said Midnight. She turned and started to leave. Before she exited, she turned back at the two and growled.
I'm going to finish it in less than a week. Let's see if they'll honour me by then!
